Lake Fever Sessions - "Animals" (featuring The Garland Sisters)

Debuted June 8th, 2009

"For the longest time, we struggled with what to name our latest EP. Even once the songs were all selected and recorded, we couldn’t pin down what sort of theme tied it all together. We considered lyrics, random phrases, bizarre words. Then it struck us that something about the song “Animals” really spoke for the CD as a whole. Its melody is possibly the catchiest of any of our songs, and, lyrically, its theme is a universal one. It’s about the animalistic nature of humanity; our natural instincts and all that. However, as sobering as that may sound, it’s really just a fairly simple and totally fun pop song. It has a four-on-the-floor beat, a rubbery bass line and a breezy solo and choruses—there’s nothing heavy about it. We like to leave lyrics open for interpretation and simply hope that people will like to dance and sing along no matter what meaning they chose to give the lyrics."

Lake Fever Sessions - "Cowboy Jazz"

Debuted June 8th, 2009

"This, without a doubt, is one of our favorite songs to play. Andrew conceived the lyrics while attending school (that’s the “flat, indulgent plane” of which he sings), and the general theme of the whole song is coping with tedium. For all three of us, music is something that breaks the routine and keeps us sane, so it’s only fitting that the song we wrote on the matter is one of our highest-energy and volatile tunes.

As a three-piece, we’re always trying to avoid the dreadful curse of empty space, which often plagues bands with three or fewer members. “Cowboy Jazz” is definitely an unusual song: It’s a waltz, it’s under two minutes long, and there really isn’t any sort of discernible chorus. Each of our parts stands out and carries the song in its own way, yet they all lock together in a manner that makes it really fun to play. Hopefully it’s just as fun to listen to."

Lake Fever Sessions - "The Ledge" (Fleetwood Mac)

Debuted June 8th, 2009

"If you’d told me at the time of And the Relatives’ formation—roughly three years ago—that we’d at some point cover a Fleetwood Mac song, I’d likely have called you a fool. Two of us discovered and fell in love with Tusk (specifically “The Ledge”) at approximately the same time, and while we don’t often readily agree on what covers to attempt, this one clicked immediately. There’s something about Lindsey Buckingham’s manic vocals and picking, John McVie’s bobbing bass line and Mick Fleetwood’s straight-ahead bombast that seem to translate well for us. Vocally and lyrically, “The Ledge” has a self-assured sort of swagger to it, but it’s an incredibly unique and weird pop song that kind of makes you scratch your head the first time you hear it: the type of song that all three of us really appreciate. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that we have our very own Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie at our disposal. Many thanks to Caitlin Rose and Tristen for making this one work. It wouldn’t without them."
